Nose and Chin Correction
The chin is formed by protruding bone on the lower jaw. Scientists aren’t sure what purpose it serves exactly. However, we do know that it is an essential feature of our appearance. Situated right below your lips, your chin serves as part of the lower border of your face, defining your face from your neck. Aesthetically, a strong, broad chin is considered attractive in men. A more delicate, narrow chin is generally considered appealing in women. However, whether you’re a man or woman, you are certain of one thing: you don’t like how your chin looks. It is under defined and makes your facial profile look out of balance. Your face may look cut off at the bottom and your neck looks like it starts too high. A receding or under projected chin can also make your nose look bigger, because it isn’t prominent enough to balance your nose out. That’s why I tell some of my patients who want rhinoplasty to consider chin augmentation instead, and they’re very pleased with the results. Dr Leila Kasrai female board certified plastic surgeon. WRITTEN BY Dr. Leila Kasrai Plastic Surgeon Chin augmentation Chin augmentation, also known as genioplasty, is an option if you want to redefine your chin contour to make it: project more broader in size rounder or more angular more prominent Unique point: offering two methods of chin augmentation I offer two methods of chin augmentation. The first is surgery, which is a permanent way to redefine your chin contour. It involves the placement of a silicone implant inside your chin. Surgery is the most common method of augmentation. I understand that some patients prefer to go the non-surgical route, which is why I also offer chin augmentation with injectable fillers. This treatment involves a gentle injection of a suitable hyaluronic acid based product to add volume to your chin. The results last a few months. Unique point: technique that minimizes infection and is less painful One of the concerns with chin augmenation surgery is the possibility of infection. Infection can be a complication that compromises your results. It may even require tissue loss and revision surgery to correct. The rate of infection is higher when the implant is placed through the mouth. This an approach known as “intra-oral” insertion. This approach is also related to a higher rate of pain and swelling during your recovery. For this reason, I perform the “extra-oral” approach. The extra-oral method involves placing the implant through a small insicion beneath the chin. This prevents the implant from being exposed to saliva (which is what increase the infection risk). Your resulting scar is barely noticeable, since it’s underneath your chin, plus you won’t experience as much swelling or discomfort as you heal.
